Equal Opportunities Statement
Nuneaton Training Centre is committed to preventing discrimination and promoting equality of opportunity both as an employer and as a provider of work based training for young people.
We aim to recognise and respect differences in age, culture, religion, gender, ethnicity, ability, disability and sexuality for both learners and staff. A similar commitment is expected from our sub contractors, employers and placement providers.
Our premises are accessible for wheelchair users and there is a lift to the second floor for people who have restricted mobility.
We have written procedures for equal opportunities which are regularly audited and updated by staff and monitored by our Investors in People subcommittee, which is made up of volunteer representatives from the Board, management and staff. Management information is collected for gender and ethnic achievement and analysed annually.
The company will appoint, train, develop and promote on the basis of merit and ability. Managers and others involved in the recruitment, selection, promotion and training of staff have a special responsibility for the practical application of the Company's Equal Opportunity Policy.
Staff and learners participate in regular training and awareness sessions to ensure equal opportunities issues remain live. Staff and learners have a personal responsibility for the application of the Company's Equal Opportunities Policy, which extends to the treatment of employees, learners and members of the public.
Our procedures identify measures to prevent and support learners from being discriminated against by staff and other learners, and a grievance procedure for staff to access if they feel they are being treated unfairly or being discriminated against.
Nuneaton Training Centre's equal opportunities policy is an important element of both the staff and learners inductions. Both staff and learners receive ongoing training and awareness sessions to ensure equal opportunities is and remains an integral part of the way all parties work together.
We recognise that young people may have already experienced discrimination because of educational, social and economic factors often beyond their control and operate an " open door" policy to ensure young people are given every opportunity to realise their true potential. We work to reduce the barriers to progression experienced by many young people by:
a) structured mentoring and support
b) sign posting to other agencies who may have expertise we lack
c) working at the pace of the learner
d) giving "one more chance" when other organisations have given up
e) providing practical and financial support where possible and appropriate e.g. clothes for interview, specialist equipment needed for jobs, emergency food supplies etc.
f) mediating with parents and other carers
g) demonstrating fairness when assessing candidates for job opportunities and qualifications.
We are a "not for profit" company whose articles of association state that we were "established to provide quality training and support for the young people of Nuneaton, Bedworth and North Warwickshire" and the Directors, staff, management and learners of Nuneaton Training Centre continually work together to ensure that equality of experience and opportunity is available to all.
