What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is a form of vocational training enabling individuals to gain the skills necessary to succeed in their chosen career and earn while they learn. Open to all age groups (16+), anyone can apply whether they are a school leaver, have been working for years or looking to start a new career.
Apprenticeships combine both on and off the job training. On the job, an apprentice will work with a mentor, learning skills on site and working towards a work-based qualification such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). Off the job, apprentices spend time with NTC, working towards a Technical Certificate qualification, which provides further knowledge and understanding of the relevant job. Apprenticeships are available at levels 2 and 3.
Apprentices also gain key transferable skills - such as working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology.
National Apprenticeship Service (NAS)
National Apprenticeship Service was established in April 2009 to:
- Take end-to-end responsibility for Apprenticeships
- Be a separate and distinct service within the LSC
- Operate at a national and sub-regional level
NAS will provide a dedicated field force to:
- to work with employers and Apprentices from initial interest to completion and progression
- to help careers guidance staff in schools and colleges
- to manage relationships with other stakeholders, including Local Authorities and Sector Skills Councils.
National Apprenticeship Vacancy Matching Service (NAVMS)
NAVMS will provide a single web based location for information on apprenticeships for use by:
- Employers
- Potential apprentices/learners
- Their parents/guardians
- Those providing advice
NAVMS will be a critical resource to support the work of NAS by providing:
- A consistent matching process, used by all employers and providers
- Management information to support planning of the Apprenticeship offer
- Tracking and monitoring to enable the right support at the right time to the right person
- Information to support the September Guarantee.
